We recently completed a toilet installation in a client’s home where the toilet wasn’t securely attached to the drain hole. Our customer had been using the toilet for over ten years, and I was surprised to see that the leak she called about was the first one she’d had. She had purchased the house with the toilet installed and had never had a problem. Yet, the only thing securing the toilet to the drain was a few rusted out bolts. When they went…so did her floor! This is just one example of what can happen with toilet installation gone wrong.
There are many reasons why you should hire a plumber for toilet installation. Here are a few worth noting.
Proper Toilet Installation
A proper toilet installation requires the right tools and equipment – including spacers. My customer’s toilet didn’t have spacers, so it literally was sitting on top of her tile floor. Spacers are designed to match the new floor surface level and come in many sizes. A lack of experience also means the inability to identify potential problems which can lead to major issues and extensive damage.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, a poor toilet installation can lead to plumbing emergencies that will require extensive skills and specialized equipment to fix. Obvious signs of problems include water stains, or even a flooded bathroom. Also, important to note is that just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean there isn’t a leak present. Quite often, leaks start under the floor or behind a wall.
The choice between doing it yourself and hiring a plumber involves more than dollars and cents. Because plumbers can complete the toilet installation faster than a DIYer can, they’ll save you money in the long run. Professional plumbers will have carry liability insurance. This means that if they don’t do the job right, they’ll need to take the appropriate actions to repair it. Talk about peace of mind! If you DIY, you’re responsible and will have to pay for any mistakes you make.
