Water Bill Too High

Is your water bill too high? If your answer is yes, just a small investment can help reduce them by 25% to 60%. Using the following tips will not only help reduce your water bills, but you’ll also have a positive impact on the environment.

Check Your Toilet for Constantly Running Water

If your toilet intermittently stops filling and then starts up again, or water continuously runs into the bowl, there is a slow leak running from the tank into the bowl. Fixing this problem will help keep your water bills from escalating. As reported by the National Sanitation Foundation, a leaking toilet can waste approximately 500 gallons of water a day. A good test is to put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet (available at home improvement stores) into the tank and see if the dye leaks or seeps into the bowl. If you find that it does, there is a leak that needs to be addressed.

Install a Low-Flow Shower Head

The average household can save thousands of gallons of water a year by installing a low flow shower head. These shower heads use approximately 2.5 gallons a minute – older models use as much as 5.5 gallons a minute. Is your water bill too high? According to the United States Department of Energy, making the switch to low-flow shower heads can reduce your water bill by 25 to 60%.

Invest in a Low-Flow Toilet

When it’s time to install a new toilet, invest in a low flow model. These innovative toilets only use 1.6 gallons of water per flush, in contrast to traditional toilets that use 3.6 gallons. When low flow toilets first came out, a lot of people were unhappy with their flushing power. However, this isn’t a problem with today’s versions.

Add Aerators to Your Sinks

Aerators both help compact and streamline water flow and increase water pressure, meaning they both save money and increase performance. Aerators are attached to the sink’s faucet head and work by adding air in the water stream, functioning as a sort of sieve to decrease the amount of water moving through. Aerators screw onto the bottom of the faucet, and there are models available that swivel as well. This is a handy feature that you can use to direct the water to the spots where you need it. Most newer faucet models already have an aerator built in.

Water Bill Too High? Check for Leaks

You should routinely check your home for leaky toilets and faucets and outside irrigation and tap lines as well. A good way to test if there’s a leak in your plumbing system is to check your water meter. Get a meter reading then wait a couple of hours and take another reading. If the reading changes, there’s a good chance that you have a leak. To get an accurate reading, don’t use any water during the test.
